What Does High MPV Mean?

Elevated MPV indicates that the bone marrow is producing larger, younger platelets — often a response to increased platelet destruction or consumption (as in immune thrombocytopenia). Large platelets are more metabolically and enzymatically active. High MPV has also been associated with increased cardiovascular risk.

What Does Low MPV Mean?

Low MPV suggests the bone marrow is producing smaller-than-normal platelets, which can occur in bone marrow failure conditions, aplastic anemia, or inflammatory conditions where platelets are consumed and the marrow is not adequately compensating.
