HbA1c: What It Means for Your Health
HbA1c measures the percentage of hemoglobin molecules that have glucose attached to them (glycated hemoglobin). Because red blood cells live approximately 120 days, HbA1c reflects your average blood sugar over the past 2-3 months. It does not require fasting and provides a more stable, long-term picture of glucose control than a single fasting glucose measurement. It is the gold standard for monitoring diabetes management.
Reference Range
Reference ranges may vary between laboratories, age groups, and sexes. The values shown are general adult reference ranges. Always compare your results to the specific range provided by your testing laboratory.

What Does High HbA1c Mean?
HbA1c of 5.7-6.4% indicates prediabetes; 6.5% or higher indicates diabetes. Higher HbA1c levels in diabetic patients correlate with increased risk of complications: retinopathy, neuropathy, nephropathy, and cardiovascular disease. Every 1% reduction in HbA1c reduces the risk of microvascular complications by approximately 37%.
What Does Low HbA1c Mean?
Very low HbA1c (below 4.0%) may indicate frequent hypoglycemia, hemolytic anemia (shortened red blood cell lifespan), or certain hemoglobin variants that interfere with the test. In diabetic patients, excessively low HbA1c from aggressive treatment increases hypoglycemia risk.
