What Does High Total Bilirubin Mean?

Above 1.2 mg/dL

Elevated total bilirubin causes jaundice and can indicate liver disease (hepatitis, cirrhosis), bile duct obstruction (gallstones, tumors), hemolytic anemia (excessive red blood cell destruction), or Gilbert's syndrome (a common, benign genetic condition causing mild bilirubin elevation, affecting 3-7% of the population). Newborns commonly have elevated bilirubin (neonatal jaundice).

What Does Low Total Bilirubin Mean?
