Total Bilirubin: What It Means for Your Health
Bilirubin is a yellow pigment produced when hemoglobin from old red blood cells is broken down. The liver processes bilirubin and excretes it in bile. Total bilirubin includes both indirect (unconjugated, before liver processing) and direct (conjugated, after liver processing) forms. Elevated bilirubin causes jaundice — yellowing of the skin and eyes — and is a key indicator of liver function and red blood cell health.

Reference ranges may vary between laboratories, age groups, and sexes. The values shown are general adult reference ranges. Always compare your results to the specific range provided by your testing laboratory.

What Does High Total Bilirubin Mean?
Elevated total bilirubin causes jaundice and can indicate liver disease (hepatitis, cirrhosis), bile duct obstruction (gallstones, tumors), hemolytic anemia (excessive red blood cell destruction), or Gilbert's syndrome (a common, benign genetic condition causing mild bilirubin elevation, affecting 3-7% of the population). Newborns commonly have elevated bilirubin (neonatal jaundice).
What Does Low Total Bilirubin Mean?
Low bilirubin is generally not clinically significant. Some research suggests that bilirubin has antioxidant properties, and slightly higher levels within normal range may be protective against cardiovascular disease.
